Supreme Court Oral Arguments Airing Next Week on C-SPAN

During the first week of the Congressional break, C-SPAN will air five of the Supreme Court’s notable oral arguments so far this session… each day, Monday through Friday, at various times:

MONDAY (4/14), 6:30p – Contraceptive Mandate

Sebelius versus Lobby Hobby, the case testing the health care law’s contraception mandate, and whether for-profit corporations may deny insurance coverage for contraceptives based on the religious beliefs of the corporate president or board.

TUESDAY (4/15), 7p – Campaign Contributions

McCutcheon versus FEC where the Supreme Court (on April 2) struck down limits on the total amount of money an individual can contribute in federal elections. The court ruled the restrictions are an unconstitutional violation of First Amendment free speech rights.

WEDNESDAY (4/16), 7p – Free Speech & Discrimination

The case of whether Secret Service agents can be sued for discrimination due to actions on the job. Protestors say two agents forced them to move away from an Oregon hotel where George W. Bush was dining while pro-Bush supporters were allowed to stay.

THURSDAY (4/17), 6:50p – Software & Business Patents

This is a case that could change the future of software patents. The court is considering whether a company can patent a ‘computerized risk analysis’ of international finance transactions. The case could determine what types of software and business-methods are eligible for patents.

FRIDAY (4/18), approx. 6:55p  – Employee Stock Ownership

A case dealing with companies that sell stock options to employees as a retirement investment. In this case, a company’s employee retirement investment plan continued selling stock even after the value dropped 74%. Employees say they weren’t told the stocks were risky.

BookTV Marks 15 Years

15 years ago this week, C-SPAN2 launched BookTV- 48 hours of author interviews and book-related programming available all weekend, every weekend.

Since BooKTV debuted on C-SPAN2 on Sept. 12, 1998, we’ve featured  approximately 9,000 authors.  That’s about 40,000 hours of original content so far. These programs and events with authors and their books are digitized and available and searchable via  C-SPAN’s video library and booktv.org, offering an archive of nonfiction writers’ views of the dawn of the 21st century. See more here: http://www.c-span.org/Series/Book-TV/15-Years/

Much cake marked the occasion at C-SPAN!

@BookBobMinz wrote the following for USA TODAY in honor of BookTV’s 15 years:

‘BookTV’ turns 15: C-SPAN, the non-profit cable network best known for its gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Senate and House, doesn’t worry about ratings. But on the 15th anniversary of BookTV, the weekly weekend-long program devoted to non-fiction books, it’s worth noting the @BookTV Twitter feed has 185,713 followers. Since BookTV began Sept. 12, 1998, it has shown interviews with more than 9,000 authors, including nine winners of the Nobel Prize for literature, seven Supreme Court justices and five presidents, all archived at booktv.org. (http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/books/2013/09/12/book-buzz/2804647/)

[UPDATE:] Reporters aren’t the only people who appreciate BookTV. Yo-Yo Ma recently named it one of his favorite TV programs:

Let me C-SPAN that for you.

As a reporter, how can the C-SPAN Video Library help me report on the people and events I cover?

More than 200,000 hours of programming, including gavel-to-gavel coverage of the House and Senate since 1987, are searchable, shareable and clippable in the C-SPAN Video Library- making it the largest political archive in the world, and a treasure trove for political reporters.

So how can you use it for research and breaking news? Here are the basics.

1. Set up a My C-SPAN profile.

You can connect your C-SPAN Video Library profile with your Facebook profile for easy login, or set a password. Either way, having a profile allows you to save all of the clips you’ll create in one place that’s easy to find.

Saved clips

Plus, you can sign up to “follow” individuals and organizations so that any time that person or entity appears on a C-SPAN network, you’ll be notified.

Following people

2. Poke around.

There’s several ways to search in the Video Library.

Chances are, if you’re looking for something that just aired, it’s right on the main page. You can also narrow down this search according to the type of program you’re looking for, using the drop-down menu on the right.

Most Recent

For past events, click “Browse” in the toolbar.

Browse

You can filter by date on the left, as well as by name, location, topic of the event and a number of other search criteria (news conference, White House event, etc.)

Browse by date

For a play-by-play of the day’s legislative activities, click on “Congressional Chronicle.”

Congressional Chronicle

play by play

An especially popular Video Library feature is the ability to sort by person. At http://www.c-spanvideo.org/nancypelosi, you can find every appearance by Leader Nancy Pelosi on a C-SPAN network, sorted by date & title, with her three most recent appearances right at the top.

Nancy Pelosi

Here, you can see that Leader Pelosi’s earliest C-SPAN appearance was on October 1, 1980.

3. Clip what you want, share it on Twitter, or send it straight to an email recipient in seconds.

When you find the event that you want, you can clip just the portion you’re interested in and share it immediately- with no downloading or uploading. Select “Clip” underneath the video, set In and Out points for your clip using the Preview/Pause button and the left & right arrow keys, and give your clip a description.

Seth Preparation- Clipping

“Save Clip” will save that clip straight to your Video Library profile. “Share Clip” will bring you to a window where you can email the link immediately to someone else, or copy the link to your new clip directly to your computer’s clipboard (same as typing Ctrl-C or right click/Copy).

copy link

Public events with public figures (including gavel-to-gavel coverage of the House and Senate) are embeddable, and this window is also the place to find embed code for those.

Embedding is a big plus for online editors because it keeps your readers on your website while they watch, rather than forcing them to navigate away to another page.

Embed code

For example, in commentary about a recent press conference…

Andrew Malcolm story

…you can embed the press conference itself.

embed within story

4. Keep in mind that @cspanLaura and @cspanJeremy are happy to help you search for something specific.

If you let us know what you’re looking for, we can even provide you with HD C-SPAN screengrabs immediately following a breaking news event, like a swearing-in:

5. Keep an eye on the C-SPAN Video Library Blog, which is updated regularly with timely information…

… leading to story ideas.

Happy clipping!
